Hawke’s Bay

Rolling Hills, Misty Valleys, and the Essence of the East Coast of New Zealand

Hawke’s Bay is a place of contrasts — layered hills, fog-filled gullies, and coastal light that shifts with the seasons. This gallery brings together my photographic impressions from across the region, including inland valleys, farmland textures, rivers, native bush, and quiet ridgelines. These are images shaped by weather, mood, and a deep connection to place.

Te Mata Peak

Ridges of Light, Weather, and Presence

Te Mata Peak stands as the sculptural heart of Hawke’s Bay — a place of geological drama, shifting weather, and timeless presence. These images capture the peak in many moods: cloaked in mist, glowing at golden hour, or layered in atmospheric depth.

Tukituki Valley

Whispering Mists, Towering Trees, and Soft Morning Light below the Peak.

The Tukituki Valley is a serene stretch of rolling hills and forest where ancient trees stand sentinel amid sweeping farmland. In the early hours, mist drifts gently through the valley, floating above the river, weaving between trunks and blanketing the landscape in quiet mystery. Here, the interplay of mist and light reveals fleeting moods — from ethereal veils that soften the outlines of leaves to shafts of golden light breaking through branches, creating a timeless scene of calm and natural grace.

Lake Tūtira

Still Waters, Seasonal Colour, and Misty Mornings in Northern Hawke’s Bay.

Lake Tūtira is a tranquil lake in northern Hawke’s Bay, surrounded by rolling hills, native bush, and seasonal colour. Shaped by changing light, weather, and reflection, it offers moments of stillness — from mist rising at dawn to autumn trees mirrored in calm water.

Pekapeka Wetlands

Still Reflections, Reeds, and Subtle Light in Central Hawke’s Bay.

Pekapeka Wetlands is a quiet, low-lying sanctuary south of Hastings, where open water, reeds, and regenerating vegetation create a layered and reflective landscape. Often softened by mist or dappled in gentle light, it’s a place of understated beauty — where mood shifts with the season and the surface tells the story of the sky.

Hawke’s Bay Coastlines and Beaches

Wild Shores, Rolling Surf, and Ever-Changing Skies Along the East Coast.

Hawke’s Bay’s coastlines stretch from the rugged cliffs of Waimarama Beach to the wide sandy expanse of Ocean Beach and the tranquil shores of Kairakau. Here, the meeting of sea and land is shaped by restless waves, shifting sands, and salt-kissed winds. Whether bathed in golden light, veiled in sea mist, or energized by stormy skies, these beaches offer a dynamic and timeless connection to the ocean’s moods.
